My go-to restaurant in Paris also happens to be… a French restaurant. No surprise there, but choosing a “go-to” in Paris is genuinely difficult. The offer is massive, and while I have several favourites in different price ranges, a true go-to can’t be too expensive, it has to be a place you can return to often without thinking twice. And for me, that place is Le Congrès.

Now, for my French readers, this pick might sound a little old school. And that’s because it is. But after years abroad, I guess I’ve become part of that expat crowd who secretly appreciates these classic French spots more than Parisians do. Le Congrès strikes the perfect balance: familiar, generous, and effortlessly elegant in its own way.

Welcome in.

The restaurant sits on Avenue de la Grande Armée, which is technically the same grand axis as the Champs-Élysées, same line, same layout, just the western side of it. If you’re not familiar with Paris, a quick look at Google Maps will make it obvious: it’s pure Haussmann from end to end. Le Congrès sits beautifully on a corner, glowing even more at night, and you enter through a big rotating door, very brasserie, very old Paris.

Inside, the feeling is immediate. Classic French service, the slightly formal, slightly sharp kind that somehow feels comforting. You can even ask for a well-cooked steak without getting an angry look from the waiter. But don’t do it. The room is warm, cosy, buzzing in that brasserie way that makes you settle in instantly. After a long day around town, it’s one of the easiest places to relax.

The menu is exactly what you expect from a proper brasserie: no experiments, no unnecessary reinventions. Just honest dishes done well. Most people go straight for the seafood platter, and honestly, it’s exceptional, incredibly fresh and generous, especially for the price. My personal splurge, when I feel like it, is the sole meunière, in my opinion the best in Paris. But it’s the priciest thing on the menu, so it’s not the reason I come back so often.

The Club Affaires menu.

The secret weapon here is the Club Affaires menu. For around forty euros, you get an apéritif, a starter like oysters or foie gras, a proper main dish, dessert, half a bottle of wine, and coffee or tea. In Paris, this sounds like fiction, but it’s real. And the kids’ menu? Ten euros for under twelve, and free for under six. This alone makes it one of the best deals in the city. I’m often the only one dining with children, it’s more of a business crowd but the staff handles it perfectly.

So why is Le Congrès my Parisian go-to? Because it gets everything right. The food is solid, the service is classic, the atmosphere is warm, and the location is as Parisian as it gets. You walk in, you breathe out, and you instantly know you’re in good hands. That’s exactly what a go-to restaurant should feel like.

Give it a try next time you’re in Paris and if you spot a French guy with two kids enjoying the Club Affaires menu, feel free to say hi.

  1. […] is in the 17th, not far from Le Congrès, but you wouldn’t guess anything from the outside. And honestly, not from the inside either. […]
